Review: Bombay Chowpaty Kulfi

24 07 2007

-submitted by Numaya

Being from Bombay I was missing authentic Bombay kulfi here in Bangalore, The kulfis served in ice cream joints were just not the right kulfi. But Bombay Chowpaty Kulfi has kept unto its name. They serve 16 different flavours of kulfi and all are the best.

The Owner Mr. Ahmed is himself from Bombay as well as his staff & they have brought to Bangalore the authentic kulfi from Bombay. They manufacture it here taking care of hygiene as well as giving original taste without adding any artificial flavour. Seasonal fruit kulfis are only available during the season of particular fruit used. The kulfis are served with falooda ( vermicelli as known in Bangalore). Matka kulfi is served in small earthen pots unlike others who give in plastic pots. They even serve faloodas of different flavours.

Believe me this place is worth a try & i bet u’ll love the kulfis & falooda !!!!!

Review 2: Mangalore Pearl Restaurant

5 07 2007

-submitted by Saood Ahmed

After quite a few claims by ‘Coastal’ and ‘Mangalorean’ restaurants in the city, this is one that actually lives up to its name!

Mangalore Pearl was a chance find and from there on, its the only Mangalorean place in Bangalore yet that I will recommend to anyone …

The ambiance isn’t the best in the world and it doesn’t sport any fancy decor but it is clean and nice and homely and that is all I am looking for!

Start with the Coccum Juice (Binda) and try to eat as much of the traditional food as you can … the Sheyyos and the Sannas and the Neer Dosas with the obvious Mutton curry. Also the Pork Bafat … that can’t be skipped! Sannas and Pork Bafat make the classic Mangy cuisine addictive 🙂

Overall it is a stunning place to go to food wise and you won’t regret it! I am not so much of a sea food freak so I haven’t really tried much of it though the prawns are quite nice … (see I get enough sea food at home … so I don’t bother with it outside!)

This place is very easy on your wallet and a meal for two with extra servings of coccum juice can easily be accommodated for under 350 rupees!

    Review: Rendezvous Restaurant

    4 07 2007

A friend took me to Rendezvous a long time ago. I was pleasantly surprised at the fine Italian dining experience that one gets at this tiny but not so spacious restaurant.

I ordered Chicken Fettuccine while my friend ordered the same with vegetables. The Fettuccine melt in the mouth and the sauces has me closing my eyes in delight. I am a Pasta fan and have rarely come across good Italian fare at reasonable rates.

The Fritters are scrumptious and come with a variety of delicious fillings. The restaurant also serves Indian food, but we gave it a wide berth.

The steaks are out of this world and we wiped the last bit of the drippings with the garlic bread that is the accompaniment. Wish there were boiled vegetables instead of the Cole Slaw . There is a choice of fries or mashed potatoes with the steak.

The Chocolate Mousse was disappointing and is not recommended.

Service is a trifle slow and the prices are definitely not low budget. The Fettuccine cost Rs.78 and the Mousse cost Rs.35/- It weighed around 50 gms. Steaks were around Rs 80/-,approx.

Good if you enjoy continental fare.
But since then, I’ve been there a couple of times, and haven’t been too satisfied. I have heard that the restaurant has been bought over by new people , and maybe thats why the standard may not be as consistent and so I do not suggest this place for taking guests.

I have become a great fan of the Chicken Hot-Dog, which takes specially tasty with the cheese.

    Review: Red Lantern Restaurant

I’ve eaten at this place many times and have always been impressed with the quality of the food that is served at what appears to be a typical hole-in-the-wall Chinese joint.

    red lat

They used to, not sure if they still do, have two chefs from Taiwan.

Try their food. It’s a pleasant surprise.

    Review: Zaks Restaurant

This is a fast food cafe located on Coles Road,Fraser Town.
They serve Arabian/Egyptian dishes, humus-White curry, falafel, etc

Food is quite good. They now have a seating place in basement and can accomodate 40 people. Reservation are not expected.

Ambience is okay, and service is fast, though they don’t have a good number of waiters.
Food is indianized version of Arabian/Egyption dishes. The sweets they serve are also good. Worth a visit once in a while. A wholesome dinner for two would cost 400/- at max.

    Dishes Description
humus- this is white curry(made from chick peas/kabuli chana).
kaboos- This is pita bread. More like a pizza base with pocket in it.
Shwarma- Needs no description. Its roll are served in pita bread.
Bakalava (TOP PICTURE)- A sweet. Good one to taste. Very difficult to describe here.

This place will appeal to people who like to try out other types of food. Not a place to spend a romantic evening.

Recently the place has started adding Indian dishes also to the menu. although I did not try out the Indian dishes myself, I wouldn’t recommend eating Indian dishes there.
